I’ve finally settled on a term for those who feel the need to hector others into “saving the planet”.
We can’t save the planet.
We can’t destroy the planet.
The dinosaurs got wiped out due to a giant meteor strike. Did the planet care? Not a whit. The planet went on its merry way. “Matter can neither be created nor destroyed.” Eventually the planet got around to either creating us or putting us in charge, depending on which flavor of evolution you subscribe to.
What was the last word of the last dinosaur? “Aaaaaaargh!”
Just because we care doesn’t mean we’re in control. If you think you can “save the planet” all by yourself, then you suffer from what the Greeks called hubris. If you feel you need to insist that others get together to save the planet, then you suffer from hubris by proxy. If you’re lucky, you’re here for your three score and ten, then you’re gone. “Tha…, tha…, that’s all folks!” Best you can do is try to make your last words more memorable than, “Aaaaaaargh!”
